Dust protection. This is the feature that separates grinders that last three years from grinders that last ten. A labyrinth seal uses a series of channels and chambers to trap dust before it reaches the bearings. Some manufacturers use a single seal. Others, like Makita, use a multi-stage labyrinth. Either way, the goal is the same: keep conductive abrasive dust out of the motor housing. If the manufacturer doesn’t mention dust protection in the specs, assume there isn’t any.
